Iain Mackie
Founder & CEO
Iain leads Malted AI as CEO, combining AI expertise with deep financial services experience. A former Quant Trader at BNY Mellon and researcher at Edinburgh Partners (acquired by Franklin Templeton), he previously built a successful analytics startup. His PhD, awarded under the Bloomberg AI Fellowship, focused on using small language models to answer domain-specific questions. Iain also sits on the board of Marqo, a vector search company backed by Blackbird and Lightspeed. He has published across NLP, knowledge graphs and information retrieval.
Carlos Gemmell
Founder & CTO
Carlos leads Malted’s technology strategy, drawing on deep experience in open-source LLMs and reasoning systems. Formerly a Research Scientist at Meta, he led the winning team in the Amazon Alexa Prize, outperforming 100+ global universities. His PhD trained LLMs to solve complex problems using external tools such as databases and calculators. Carlos has published at top conferences on code generation, reasoning and conversational AI, and ensures Malted’s systems uncover intelligence others miss.
Federico Rossetto
Founder & Chief of Engineering
Federico drives engineering at Malted AI, building high-performance systems for financial services. A former software developer at Lynx, he won the Fujitsu AI-NLP Challenge and the Alpe Adria international mathematics competition. His PhD explored how LLMs handle multimodal tasks, including music and structured reasoning. Federico has published at leading venues in machine learning and representation learning, and ensures Malted’s technology delivers both sophistication and scale.

Ewen Fleming
Head of Financial Services
Ewen leads Malted AI’s Financial Services practice, bringing over 40 years’ experience in retail banking, wealth management, risk and strategy. He has held senior leadership roles at RBS and Santander and later led the Financial Services practices at Grant Thornton and Johnston Carmichael. Ewen combines deep sector knowledge with strategic insight and regulatory understanding, helping clients transform performance and resilience. His experience ensures Malted’s solutions deliver measurable impact across the financial services landscape.
Dr Sandy Nairn
Board member
Sandy has more than 40 years’ experience as a professional investor and is the author of three acclaimed books on investment. He manages the Global Opportunities Trust plc, a self-managed global investment trust focused on undervalued assets. Sandy was founder and CEO of Edinburgh Partners, later acquired by Franklin Templeton Investments, where he became Chairman of the Templeton Global Equity Group. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, he holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde and has been a CFA charterholder since 1992.
